How do you get a regional workhorse like the ATR42 or the ATR72 to do twice as much work? You convert it to overnight cargo handling - or seasonal or temporary cargo handling.

It is possible! A new cargo conversion kit from Indraéro Siren in conjunction with ATR makes it possible to pull out the seating and forward partition and replace them with container tracks in a very short time - in 45 minutes! You then utilize the forward door to get the containers in and out with a dedicated moveable loading ramp or an existing loader.

The change back to a passenger cabin is just as quick, so it is possible to use the aircraft for passenger service during the day and cargo service overnight. And if that sounds like breakneck pace, a conversion on a weekly basis for cargo runs on Saturdays may be more realistic. Or convert the aircraft for seasonal cargo service.

Here is the process:
First - The forward cargo masts and nets are removed, the forward partition is removed and the passenger seats are taken out. Everything else is left in place.

Then - The ball mat is installed on the floor inside the forward cargo door, side guides and roller trays are installed in the cabin utilizing the passenger seat tracks, and container locks and end stops are installed.

Finally - The dedicated (83.5"x43"x50"H) containers are brought on board utilizing a loading ramp or a loader.

It takes just two people to do it!

The cost of the conversion kit and the containers is very reasonable - priced that way to ensure this is a viable solution for ATR operators.
