The SAR-DF 517 Direction Finder from Becker Avionics is a very significant step forward from older homing and direction finding equipment. It is small and light weight (about 5 lbs total), and can be used in helicopters, fixed wing aircraft and vehicles. The system consists of an antenna that mounts on the underside of the aircraft (or the roof of a vehicle) and a small display and control unit. It is also possible to combine the system with Becker's SARSIS Navigator GPS-based moving map navigation system with the locator beam displayed as an overlay on the map. The SAR-DF 517 works on the aviation and maritime SAR frequencies, and it also works on the 406 MHz COSPAS-SARSAT satellite frequency. As opposed to most other direction finders it can pick up the very short duration signal emitted by locator beacons on the satellite frequency - a 450 millisecond digital pulse every 50 seconds. Between pulses it will listen for continuous signals on two other emergency (selectable) frequencies. The unit can listen to other frequencies in its bandwidth, including training frequencies. The unit operates on 12-32VDC supply and requires only 400mA of power. |

NEW FEATURERecently Becker Avionics USA and LoJack Corporation jointly announced that the DF 517 (and the RT 500M and RT 300 direction finders) can be equipped to work with LoJack's tracking and recovery technology when sold to law enforcement agencies. This will enable them to track and recover - in real time - stolen vehicles equipped with the LoJack transponder. It is fast and very precise, and you combine two great features in a small space in the aircraft.
