The SAR products we present here cover two aspects of a wide field - Locator Beacons and the Direction Finders used to pinpoint their location. The principle is simple: aircraft are equipped with Emergency Locator Beacons (ELTs) that are activated if the aircraft crashes. This battery-powered device will send out a radio signal in one of the designated emergency bands, and the Direction Finders are used to home in on the signal and direct rescue personnel to the location. You can also have Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) that are used by - and we hope this is not a surprise - individuals: general aviation pilots, boaters or others who want this extra protection if they should find themselves in an emergency. The marine equivalent of the ELT is the EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicator Radio Beacon) and there are "man-over-board" transmitters and receivers. |

| Becker Avionics is a driving force in the development of both PLBs and airborne, marine and vehicle-based Direction Finders. The emergency frequencies used are 121.500 MHz (VHF), 243.000 MHz (UHF) for conventional SAR and the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite frequency of 406 MHz. - the Becker SAR products transmit on/listen to all three. The direction finders also pick up the maritime Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) and other frequencies you program. COSPAS-SARSAT is an international partnership that uses satellites to listen for distress signals, then conveys location data, etc. to the affected national Search And Rescue organizations. Their objective is to save lives by providing very fast response. The Becker products are fully compatible with the COSPAS-SARSAT system.
